A warehouse membership is a bet that your household will out-save the fee. This calculator runs that bet on your own numbers — what you really spend there, how much cheaper it is than your usual store, and whether you fill up at the pump — and tells you which tier, if any, pays for itself.
How the math works
- Yearly savings = monthly Costco spend × 12 × the price gap you enter, plus gallons × 12 × cents saved per gallon.
- Gold Star comes out ahead when those savings beat the $65 fee.
- Executive adds a 2% reward on eligible (non-gas) purchases, capped at $1,250 a year, for a $130 fee — so the extra $65 only pays once eligible spending passes about $3,250 a year.
- The price gap is the number that matters most, and it is personal: it depends on what you buy and what you'd otherwise pay.
